What makes for a fluffy towel?

The GSM - grams per square metre - of a towel impacts its fluffiness. The higher the GSM, the heavier and thicker a towel is, and the more absorbent it is. High GSM towels - over 500 GSM - tend to be deemed the standard when it comes to bath towels and bath sheets. Particularly luxurious bath towels and sheets will be in the region of 700 GSM, so choose this weight if you're looking for an incredibly fluffy towel. Lower GSM towels - between 300 and 400 GSM - are better suited as beach, pool and gym towels. Their thin nature also means they can be rolled or folded up small to fit into a bag or backpack.

The type of fibre that a towel is comprised of also impacts it's level of fluffiness and luxuriousness. Egyptian cotton is deemed the very best when it comes to bath towels. It's grown in nutrient-rich land in a humid climate which is the ideal conditions for producing high quality cotton. It feels much softer than other varieties of cotton and it tends to be incredibly durable. Whereas lower quality cotton is more susceptible to wearing thin and pilling, Egyptian cotton will last and last for years.

Although Egyptian cotton bath towels are more expensive than other alternatives, the investment pays off when you can enjoy soft, fluffy towels every time you step out of the shower for years to come. Bamboo bath towels are also a great choice if you're looking for a fluffy towel. Bamboo is an eco-friendly fibre that's also naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It's highly absorbent and soft and makes for incredibly cosy towels, particularly when blended with cotton.

Bath sheet vs bath towel - what's the difference?

The terms 'bath sheet' and 'bath towel' are often used interchangeably, but they are technically two separate things, with the difference between them being their size. Bath sheets tend to be significantly bigger than bath towels.

They vary in dimensions, but you can expect them to be somewhere in the region of 35 inches wide and 70 inches long - that's around 90cm by 180cm. Bath towels are usually in the region of 26 inches wide and 54 inches long - around 65cm by 137cm. The generous size of bath sheets makes them feel like a more luxurious option than bath towels. You can comfortably wrap yourself up in them to step out of the bathroom after showering.

Bath towels are more functional. They help you dry off, but their smaller size means they can't easily be wrapped around the waist while you wander around the house. They do come in handy for people with long hair because they can be wrapped around the head to dry hair off, whereas bath sheets are usually too big and bulky for this purpose.

Bath towels tend to be easier to hang to dry on standard towel rails, whereas large bath sheets require larger rails or they must be folded up which means they take longer to dry. If you have a small bathroom with limited space for towels, bath sheets may not be the most practical option. For kids, bath towels are a more sensible option because their smaller size is ideal for small bodies.

Bath towels vs bath flannels vs hand towels - how are they different?

Bath flannels are significantly smaller than bath towels. They're around 13 inches square, which is around 33cm. Flannels are often referred to as washcloths or facecloths because they tend to be used wet and with soap, shower gel or cleanser to wash the face or body rather than to dry the skin.

Hand towels are usually rectangular and measure in the region of 18 inches wide and 30 inches long - around 45cm by 76cm. They're usually used to dry off the hands after washing them, but they're also useful for drying off the face after washing it over the sink. They can come in handy for drying off very young children or infants, or for wrapping around the head after washing hair.

Are towel bales and sets a better choice than buying towels individually?

Towel bales are sets of towels, either all of the same size or in a selection of sizes. They are a great choice if you're looking for a full matching set, for example if you've just moved into a new home or you want to replace all of your towels at once. They tend to work out cheaper overall than if you were to buy each towel in the set individually. Plus, if you want a set of towels all in the same colour you can rest assured they'll match when you buy them in a single bundle.

The number of pieces you get in a towel bale varies, but a typical set would include six towels in total - two bath towels, two hand towels, and two face cloths. They're ideal for a couple who want a matching set of towels each, or a single person who wants spares of each piece. The more luxurious sets might also include bath sheets and additional face cloths. When it comes to buying sets of towels, you should be aware that the more pieces you buy at once, the more money you save.
